Unlock Western Victoria

Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur has called for the urgent relaxation of restrictions by local government area, across rural and regional Victoria.

In the electorate of Western Victoria, there are a total of 153 active cases (99 of which are in Melton) across over 79,000 square kilometres and 863,490 people.

All but 9 of the 24 local government areas in the electorate do not have a single active case of COVID-19, many of which have not had one for weeks. Some have never had one case.

Mrs McArthur said, “We need to unlock Victoria, especially rural and regional Victoria, whether it is by ‘bubble’, local government area or postcode - it doesn’t matter. Just so long as we get life and business back to some form of normality.”

“We need to learn to manage the virus, given that an elimination strategy is about as achievable as eliminating the flu and hanging out for a vaccine could last years.”

“Mr Andrews needs to smarten-up his protection of healthcare workers and patients within the hospital system in Melbourne to stop the spread of the virus, as happened with a Colac patient recently returning from a Melbourne hospital.”

“This is to say nothing of his totally inept contract tracing system, dependent on sticky notes and fax machines!”

“However, it seems that problem may be soon on the mend as he’s sent his ‘students’ to ‘classes’ in NSW to learn how the gold standard system operates.”
