Dan Does Deals with the AFL but not the AEU

Today, the Premier announced that as of Wednesday, Victorians will be able to host up to five visitors in their home.

However, he refused to announce this last week to allow Victorians to visit their mothers on Mother’s Day.

The Premier made no new announcement on students returning to school, despite having claimed that “I listen to the advice of the Chief Health Officer.”

The Chief Health Officer declared that “From a public health point of view, I don’t have an issue with schools reopening.”

If not from a public health point of view, from what view is the Premier basing his decisions?

The Australian Education Union (AEU) is reportedly opposed to schools immediately reopening in Victoria.

He also announced that “There’s been a lot of work between AFL and public health team. Training will be able to resume from midnight tomorrow night and that paves the way for the AFL to be back.”

Quotes attributable to Bev McArthur MP:

“The Premier seems to be able to make a deal with the AFL but not with the Victorian Branch of the AEU.”

“The difference in public health risk between relaxing restrictions on Wednesday and on Sunday is surely negligible. Daniel Andrews could clearly have allowed Victorians to visit their mothers on Mother’s Day, but chose not to.”

“The announcements today were extremely disappointing for many Victorian families – the Premier failed to act on advice of the Chief Health Officer who he claims to listen to, in reopening our schools.”

“If Mr Andrews is not basing decisions on his public health advice, then clearly his decisions are based on politics.”
