Powerline Probe Welcomed

Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur has welcomed today’s announcement that the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project will be subject to a full Environmental Effects Statement (EES), an assessment which involves rigorous study of the environmental impact the 190km overhead power-line route would have on the area and individuals.

Mrs McArthur said:  “I wrote to Minister Wynne last month to ask for this EES.  I have always been unhappy that the consultation to date, carried out by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) took no account of environmental factors, and indeed appeared to involve little consultation with the public of any kind.”

She added: “Having spoken many times with residents and landowners who would be affected by the scheme, I am aware of just how worried people are, and how inadequate they consider the consultation to date.”

“The Minister has promised that the EES will make comparative judgement on ‘different feasible routes, alignments, design and operational alternatives for the project – as well as the effectiveness of proposed measures to avoid, minimise and offset any environmental impacts.’  ‘I will hold the Government, and AusNet, to account on this every step of the way.”

"I am now in encouraging communication with AEMO and AusNet and am assured they are serious about improving the avenues of consultation and discussion.

“I can also promise that I will undertake to facilitate a separate summit to include all stakeholders in this huge project, including Councils, AEMO and AusNet."

“I have been incredibly impressed by the knowledge, enthusiasm and dedication of so many community members to date.  It is essential that this process is now transparent, and meaningful, and allows proper consultation with the people whose lives it would so greatly affect.”
