School’s Out Forever

Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur asked the Education Minister in Parliament about Melton Secondary College’s decision to make Year 7-9 students learn from home on Thursday and Friday.

The school said that it was part of a trial of “Online Learning Days as a way to build our students’ skills in self-directed learning and work management”.

Melton Secondary College received significant backlash from the parents and school community and have now reportedly reversed the decision.

Mrs McArthur told the Parliament, “Minister, due to the failures of the Andrews Government, school students in Victoria missed over 100 days of school last year.”

“Students learning from home was enormously challenging and stressful for both families and students.”

“Employers do not pay parents to simultaneously work and home-school.”

Mrs McArthur has asked the Minister whether the Government will “require all state schools to ensure that learning takes place on campus”.
