Don’t Let Water Be A Pipe Dream

Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur asked the Environment Minister in Parliament about the West Grampians Pipeline Project.

Many areas in West Wimmera still remain without access to any piped water supply, significantly inhibiting businesses and preventing any new ones from being set up or moving there.

The pipeline would prove transformational for existing agricultural enterprises, allowing them to consolidate and to expand, as well as serving the towns of Harrow and Edenhope.

Without access to underground water the towns currently rely on run-off into catchment dams and rivers and streams for supply of water.

Mrs McArthur recently visited the West Wimmera Shire Council in Edenhope, where she heard the community’s concerns.

Mrs McArthur told the Parliament, “It destroys jobs and property values and eventually shrinks populations and weakens towns.”

“Every job created is hard won for them. But this pipeline will be truly transformational infrastructure, making businesses and communities viable, attracting jobs and enhancing property and land values.”

“It is five years since feasibility funding was given to the project.”

Mrs McArthur asked the Minister, “when will you support the communities which so badly need this enabling infrastructure?”
