Government Must Reject Green Gas Hysteria

Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur has asked the Labor Government to condemn the Greens’ opposition to gas drilling in her electorate.

Mrs McArthur called out the Greens for campaigning against “Beach Energy’s development of its successful Enterprise Project exploration near Port Campbell into a production well.”

The Greens’ campaign is titled ‘Save the 12 Apostles from New Gas Drilling’.

This is despite, as Mrs McArthur clarified in Parliament, “there will be no drilling within the 12 Apostles Marine Park.”

Mrs McArthur said, “Extended reach drilling is a proven, safe, technology with minimal environmental impact. It will not damage aquifers or impact the cliffs.”

“Through its development the project has faced complex, detailed and extensive regulation from multiple state and federal bodies."

“Protection of the cultural and environmental value of the area is central to this. In production, it will be subject to stringent ongoing monitoring.”

“Gas is absolutely vital for all Victorians, for affordable cooking and heating in homes, and for employment in agricultural production and manufacturing.”

Mrs McArthur asked the Minister for Resources, Jaala Pulford MP, “will you join me in rejecting the populist, ignorant, ‘cliff-collapsing’ environmental scare-stories which the Green party are whipping up to support their hard-line anti-gas agenda?”
